Notable alumni

Athletics

Sports offered include football, soccer, baseball, softball, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, swimming, flag football, and track and field, along with club teams for ice hockey, lacrosse, and bowling. Boys' sports teams are called the Bloomingdale Bulls, and girls' sports teams are called the Bloomingdale Lady Bulls. Led by Coach Dave Tennian, the boys' soccer team was voted The Tampa Tribune's Team of the Decade for the '90's, winning state championships in '93, '95, and '98. 1993 Team voted the best team in the history of High School Sports by ESPN, USA Today and Florida Sports Hall of Fame. Led season long by a hard hitting defense and strong goalkeeping the 1993 Bulls gave Bloomingdale the first State Champion for the school. The six overtime 1993 State Championship game stands to this day as a record for overtimes in a State Title game. They were ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/USA Today Top Ten poll in '93, '95, '98 and '99. During the regular season of 2004, they were ranked No. 1 before losing to the Miami Sunset. Emily Janss, who played for the women's soccer team went on to star with the New York Power of the WUSA, starred for the Lady Bulls in the 90's. The women's team won a state title in 2001. The cheerleading squad has won several titles, including state champions in 2008 and 2009 and is striving for their third year victory. They went to states for the first time in the 2007-2008 school year and won first place. The football team is below par, usually losing all but perchance three games. Chad Bratzke is the only B'Dale football player to play in the NFL, primarily with the Indianapolis Colts. After coach Corey Brinson's resignation after the final game of the 2007 football season, Bloomingdale hired Jason Stokes as the new head football coach. After hiring the new coach, Bloomingdale ended their losing streak and qualified for the playoffs, for the first time in the school's history. Coach Stokes resigned at the end of the 2008 football season because he wanted to "to be at a city school because that's where I'm from". Jason Stokes is set to coach Middleton high in the 2009-2010 football season.[4] John Booth has been hired as Bloomingdale's new football head coach.[5]

Accomplishments and Accolades

Music Programs

Bloomingdale High School's music program is consistently among the top programs in the district and state. They travel annually to competitions throughout the southeastern United States. The Band, Orchestra, and Chorus are ranked in the top categories most years in southeastern regional and state competitions. The chorus has been led since the 1990s by Mrs. Bev Sutherland.

The Rajun' Bull Marching Band is the largest in the county, with over 250 members. The 2010-2011 halftime show presents "British Invasion" music. It features Coldplay's Viva La Vida, The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, and Queen's We Are The Champions. They perform at many events, such as The Strawberry Festival, Gasparilla Parade, The Super Bowl Experience and numerous other occurrences and parades. They also marched in the 2011 London New Years Day Parade. The band is led under the direction of Jon Sever, who before 2002 was a graduate teaching assistant with the Florida State University Marching Chiefs and before that with the River Ridge Royal Knights marching band program. The Rajun' Bull Marching Band has consistently earned the highest ranking of a Superior, since the school's opening in 1988.[6]

Other Notables

Bloomingdale's science program regularly receives awards from various state and local agencies. Biology students have planted hundreds of thousands of student-grown plants in Tampa Bay.

On December 1, 2008, Bloomingdale's Thespian Troupe #4235 received 6 Superior ratings at Individual Events theatre competition including a written one-act and performance of a monologue, an ensemble scene, and three solo musical numbers.

Bloomingdale's orchestra program, directed by SuLing Chau Caballero, is also among the finest in the area. They recently took a trip to China to play for the pre-game events of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

Foreign Language

Spanish

The Spanish program is by far the larger of Bloomingdale's foreign language programs. For the 2009-2010 school year, Bloomingdale offered these seven Spanish courses: Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish II Honors, Spanish III Honors, Spanish IV Honors, Spanish V Honors, and AP Spanish Language.[7]

Students who are taking Spanish III Honors or higher, and who have also had two previous years of Spanish in school, are eligible to be in the Spanish Honor Society (SHS). The Spanish Honors classes take an annual field trip to Epcot in conjunction with Bloomingdale's chapter of the SHS.

French

The 2009-2010 French program consists of French I, French II, French III Honors, and French IV Honors.[7] French students who are in French III Honors or higher, and who have taken two years of French, can be in the French Honor Society (FHS). The French students can also take an annual trip to France and Epcot.

Clubs and organizations

Bloomingdale High School currently offers three types of clubs: special interest, academic/honor, and service clubs.[8] Clubs are grouped into three groups: Red Clubs, White Clubs, and Black Clubs. The first three Wednesdays of most months (March and May being common exceptions) are club days. Club days are days when students meet with their clubs between second and third periods. The bell schedule is adjusted so that approximately 5–7 minutes are removed from the regular class periods in order to allow for this club period.

Air Force JROTC Program

Bloomingdale offers a JROTC program.

The AFJROTC program has consistently been one of the top programs in the southeast since its start in 1993. The program's Color Guard, Drill Team (armed and unarmed) have been top contenders in regional competition since the late 1990s. The Unarmed Inspection Team won Third place at the 2009 JROTC Nationals, held in Daytona, Florida, on 2 May 2009.
